Abigail Rehard
Abby Rehard is a PhD candidate in Musicology at Florida State University. Her research interests center on Afro-Brazilian drumming traditions like maracatu and capoeira and issues of gender, race, representation, and social activism. As a 2023 Fulbright Scholar, she is currently conducting field research with Baque de Mina, an all-women’s maracatu group based in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, exploring how their drumming, in public spaces throughout the city, not only challenges social inequalities in Brazil but creates liberating spaces that embrace a spectrum of femininity.
