I chose FSU because it is an R1 University that supports students with research. Also, the Department of Linguistics is very complete with each area of study having a main professor and specialist.
Motivation to pursue a graduate degree
My strong desire and passion for knowledge, critical thinking, and deep analysis motivated me to pursue a degree in order to contribute to a better society.
Importance and impact of research
What I love about languages is that they reflect so much about people’s identity, the way we think, the way we see the world, the way we express our feelings and opinions, are always seen through this code, the one that we call: language. I have a deep interest in the way a language interferes with people’s identity in their culture and their gender roles. Another interest of mine is how an adult can acquire and learn a second or third language.
Advice for prospective graduate students
Grad school is a great opportunity where you give yourself time to grown intellectually. It is an entirely new dynamic where you stop receiving knowledge and become the one that creates new theories, which in the long run, will allow you to transform society. Also, it grounds you. After having a position of power, multiple recognitions, titles, and publications, you still need to treat everyone with respect, tolerance and be sensitive to other people’s needs.
