Jacob Newberry

September 2012: Jacob Newberry | English | Questionnaire | August 27, 2012

Jacob is a Ph.D. candidate in Creative Writing in the Department of English at FSU. His home town is Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Jacob came to FSU after getting a B.A. in Music and an M.A. in French Literature at the University of Mississippi. While there, he wrote, so when it came time to continue his studies, he realized that FSU’s Ph.D. program in Creative Writing was easily the best in the country.

Jacob’s time as a graduate student at FSU has been quite fulfilling. In addition to publishing work in internationally known publications, including Granta and Out Magazine, he has won several fellowships and prizes from, among others, the Corporation of Yaddo, the MacDowell Colony, and Ploughshares. He was also awarded a student Fulbright Fellowship in Creative Writing (poetry) to Israel, during which time he was a feature subject for articles in Ha’aretz and the Jerusalem Post. He recently found out he has been awarded a two-year Postdoctoral Fulbright Fellowship in Creative Writing (nonfiction), also to Israel. While there, he’ll be interviewing and writing about queer refugees from neighboring countries who come to Tel Aviv to escape persecution.
