Why FSU?

I chose FSU because of the Program in Neurosciences’ reputation and history of producing scholars that have made a huge impact in their respective fields. The program has robust lines of research, specifically in social behavior. I also appreciate the level of collaboration the faculty, staff, and students provide to help make the overall experience worth it.

Motivation to pursue a graduate degree

I enjoy how neuroscience research allows the opportunity to understand everyday communication and social interactions. I’m motivated to pursue research as a means to communicate complex ideas to public audiences of all age groups and levels of experience. Ultimately, I want to know what behavior is, which is why I study the brain and its relation to social behavior.

Importance of research and work

My research aims to understand what contributes to adaptive social behavior. From the molecule to behavior, I am interested in social reward and the mechanisms that drive social approach and affiliation. My research is important for understanding the pathogenesis of social deficits such as social anxiety or autism.

Advice for anyone considering graduate school

I always recommend being curious and asking lots of questions.

Career aspirations

I hope to continue conducting neuroendocrinology research at the university level. I enjoy mentorship and hope to continue serving underrepresented students interested in STEM careers.

Accomplishments during graduate career

I am a recipient of the McKnight Doctoral Fellowship, which provides financial and professional support for my studies and career goals. By not being burdened by the expenses associated with completing my degree and attending scientific meetings, I am able to focus my attention on developing my skills as a scientist, professional, and mentor. Furthermore, by participating in the McKnight professional development workshops and conferences, I can continue to hone my skills as an effective communicator to scientists and non-scientists alike.
