College of Engineering

The College of Engineering was established as a joint program serving two universities in Tallahassee, Florida: The Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, which received recognition from the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering in 2010 for ranking number one as the institution of origin for African Americans earning Doctorates in Natural Science and Engineering; and, The Florida State University which has gained worldwide recognition for its extensive graduate and research programs.

The College is a leading academic institution with excellent records of achievement in research and public service. It offers Bachelor of Science (B.S.) programs in chemical, civil, computer, electrical, industrial and mechanical engineering as well as M.S. and Ph.D. programs. The College has attracted an outstanding faculty from all over the world. Thousands of young, intelligent and self-motivated men and women have attended the College in the last two decades, receiving over 5000 degrees. These graduates are a diverse group of engineers, from many races, ethnicities, and nationalities.

Most recently, the Masters and Doctoral programs for the interdisciplinary program of Material Science and Engineering has been moved under the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering.

Materials Science and Engineering Graduate Program

Materials have played a crucial role in the technological evolution of society, from the earliest Stone Age to our modern age, which future generations may call the Silicon Age. The field of Materials Science and Engineering is broad and interdisciplinary, building on fundamentals of engineering, physics, chemistry, and biology. We manipulate microstructural, mechanical, electrical, optical, magnetic, chemical, and biological properties, and use advanced computational methods to develop new materials and modify existing materials. At FSU, MS&E is a completely interdisciplinary graduate program offering M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. It is made up of faculty members from 9 departments across campus who work on a wide variety of materials creating and disseminating fundamental knowledge and developing advanced technologies.

Although the Ph.D. degree in MS&E at FSU is relatively new, materials research has a strong history at FSU. Since 1990, FSU has been home to the NSF National High-Magnetic Field Laboratory, and faculty members connected with the lab and across FSU have earned international recognition for their cutting edge materials research.
