Matthew Martenson is currently a PhD Candidate in the degree program of Exercise Physiology in the Department of Nutrition, Food and Exercise Sciences in the College of Human Sciences at FSU.  Originally from Athens, GA, he began is academic career at Mercer University by earning a B.S. in Biology and a Master’s in Public Health.  After discovering a passion for exercise and its role in promoting health and preventing disease, Matthew decided to pursue an M.S. in Applied Physiology and Kinesiology at the University of Florida.  During his time as a Master’s student, he worked on several studies related to the role of strength training in improving pain and function in patients with osteoarthritis.  Before continuing his academic pursuit, Matthew worked as an exercise physiologist at Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel.  In this role, he served as the lead for the Exercise is Medicine physician referral program and started Well On Your Way – a free 12-week diabetes intervention program for patients in the surrounding community.  After 4 years of running these programs and working with over 400 individuals, Matthew began the doctoral Exercise Physiology program at FSU in 2017 as a recipient of the College of Human Sciences Preeminence Endowment.  His dissertation work focuses on the application of an ankle splint in patients with peripheral artery disease in improving pain and walking performance.  Recently, he tied for first place in FSU’s 3-Minute Thesis competition.  In his leisure, Matthew enjoys pursuing physical fitness, Florida wildlife, and college football.
