Rachel Carlisle

Rachel Masters Carlisle is a doctoral student in the Department of Art History in the College of Fine Arts at FSU who specializes in Northern European art (c. 1400-1600) with particular interests in early modern cosmopolitanism, antiquarianism, artistic patronage, and practices of collecting. Her dissertation considers the revival of local antiquity in early modern Augsburg, Germany via the appropriation of all’antica forms paradoxically borrowed from the visual arts and architecture of the Venetian ambient.

Rachel graduated with her MA in the History of Art from the Courtauld Institute of Art in 2014, earning a distinction for her thesis examining the production of Netherlandish silver-stained roundels in the sixteenth century. As a PhD student and Patricia Rose Teaching Fellow at Florida State University, Rachel has received various fellowships and grants including the Kress Language School Fellowship to study German at Middlebury Language School (Summer 2019), the FSU International Programs Florence Teaching Fellowship (Summer 2018), Newberry Renaissance Consortium Grants, Helen J. Beard Conference Travel Grants, and Congress of Graduate Students Conference Presentation Support Grants.
