Mary Duffy is a fourth-year graduate student in the Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program at Florida State University (FSU). She is from Miami, FL. Mary received her B.A in Psychology from the University of Saint Joseph in 2014 and her M.S. in Clinical Psychology from FSU in 2019. She currently works under the mentorship of Dr. Thomas Joiner. Her research interests focus on the connections among negative and dysfunctional relationships with one’s body, eating disorders, and suicidal thoughts and behaviors. She hopes that this work will aid in improving assessment and treatment of individuals with eating disorders, including developing effective interventions for suicide risk in this group. At this time, Mary has published over 25 articles in peer-reviewed academic journals and has presented her research at several national and international conferences. Currently, Mary is working with a network of eating disorder treatment centers to gather data for her projects, including her dissertation, which will investigate the role of mortality threat in the maintenance of eating pathology. Her graduate clinical experience includes roles as an individual therapist, group therapist, and assessment specialist for children, adolescents, and adults in both inpatient and outpatient treatment settings. She has also served as a peer supervisor for psychological trainees and as the coordinator of the FSU Psychology Clinic Dialectical Behavior Therapy Program. In the future, Mary would like to pursue a career as the Clinical Director of an eating disorder treatment facility, a position that will enable her to remain involved in both research and clinical practice. During her graduate career Mary has received the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, FSU Graduate Student Research and Creativity Award, Beck Institute Graduate Student Training Scholarship, and Ermine B. Owenby Jr. Award. She is also a member of the FSU Fellows Society, the Association for Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies, and the American Psychological Association. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, taking walks in the park, and playing with her two cats, Batman and Syd.
