Why FSU?

During my undergraduate studies, an FSU graduate student visited my university (he attended the same university). The experience he described regarding his graduate school experience sparked my interest. The proximity to my family and friends was also a determining factor.

Motivation to pursue a graduate degree

The motivation stems from just wanting to learn more about a field that already captures so much of my interest.

Importance and impact of research

I study proteins from various living organisms by mass spectrometry. The study of proteins is crucial as this is how we can learn more about the human body and, more importantly, diseases that target us.

Advice for prospective graduate students

When considering graduate school, it’s necessary to get a complete picture of what a graduate student in your field does on a day-to-day basis. It’s also particularly important to focus on your mental and physical health during graduate school – so it is good to learn about the resources an institution has available for you in that regard.

Accomplishments during graduate career

I ran my first 10k and half-marathon. I also increased my involvement for the Advancement of Women and Minorities in STEM: https://www.seeitbeitstemit.com/get-inspired/2019/10/2/meet-zeljka-popovic https://www.1mwis.com/profiles/Zeljka-Popovic.

Career aspirations

Once I complete my doctoral degree at FSU, I hope to continue my education in academia, research, or industry. I hope to grow my knowledge in the field and possibly move on to a more administrative role. While I love research, I want to work on improving how we communicate research to the general public and those outside of our field of study.

Funding

I was funded for 7 semesters on the MagLab NSF Grant, and just received funding from two grants.
